Spoiler alert: that’s not a sustainable way to run your business.
Not having boundaries can lead to burnout or a growing dissatisfaction with your work, and that’s the opposite of why many of us become virtual assistants in the first place. For example, my work hours during the week are strictly between 8 am and 3:30 pm.
But it’s not just about work hours. Consider how and when you communicate with clients. Email, Slack, Voxer? What’s your response time? I aim for 24 hours. Communication channels, phone number sharing – these are factors to ponder when defining what you do and don’t want in your business. Whether you’re just starting or treating this as a side gig, get these boundaries in place ASAP.
Learn from My Mistake: The Almost-Burnout
When I started, I didn’t have these boundaries, and it nearly led to burnout. It affected not only me but also my family because I felt the constant need to be on and ready to go. If you’re just starting out, incorporate these boundaries into your pricing guide or initial client communication. Make it clear that work outside specified hours needs to be requested in advance.

For those with existing clients and boundaries being pushed, my biggest piece of advice is to be honest with them. Approach the conversation openly, avoiding blame. They likely don’t realize they’re overstepping. Remember, they’ve all been where we are – starting a business from scratch and at some point, setting boundaries.
An open conversation about the changes you’re making going forward is the most productive way to establish these boundaries.
Granted, not everyone will take this well. Some might resist your boundaries, but the clients you want to work with long term will understand. It’s tough to consider losing a client, especially when starting out. But if you cling to clients unwilling to respect your boundaries, you won’t have space for those who genuinely want to see you thrive – the types of clients you want to work with.
